Pediatric Eye Care

When should children have an eye exam?

We at The Eye Clinic are advocates for the importance of early eye care for infants and children. Our doctors are providers for InfantSEE, which is a program that provides one wellness eye exam for infants aged 6-12 months old. Learn more about InfantSEE here.

We are also providers for Vision Start, which is a program that provides free eye exams to children in need aged 4-7 years old. Learn more about Vision Start here.

It’s important for parents to make sure their children’s eyes are healthy. Approximately 80 percent of all learning during a child’s first 12 years comes through vision.

Good eye health and vision is important to your child’s learning, and vision problems can affect their performance in school. Undetected or untreated vision problems can hinder a child’s ability to perform to their full potential in school. In fact, many eye diseases can impair vision or lead to vision loss, which is why it is important for people of all ages to have their eyes checked regularly.

Your baby’s first eye exam should be at 6 months. The eye doctor will check that your infant is meeting visual milestones, such as:

  • moving eyes properly
  • eye tracking
  • focusing on object
  • eye teaming–how well the eyes work together
  • Hand-eye coordination

Your eye doctor may also screen for eye conditions such as:

  • strabismus – or eye crossing and misalignment
  • farsightedness (hyperopia)
  • nearsightedness (myopia)
  • astigmatism

Let us help your child get a head start on good vision so they can discover the world in a whole new light. Schedule an appointment with Drs. Moen, Enderle or Johnston at Devils Lake Eye Clinic today!
